Abstract
This text presents a critique of the idea of technology as something given, employing what has been themed as politics of artifacts, as a critical tool. It revisits some of Martin Heidegger's foundational notions, beginning with The Question Concerning Technology and Building, Dwelling, Thinking, texts that have been fundamental and frequently cited in studies of architecture and urbanism. It then brings to the fore the ideas of Lewis Mumford, with his argument for the historical persistence of two political positions regarding technology: one democratic and another authoritarian. Implying that both of them have lasting impacts on the culture and politics of dwelling. As a point of contrast and verification, three postgraduate level research works focused on technology developed in the Master's Program in Architecture at the University of Veracruz are presented. Given the introductory critical approach, these should be viewed with fresh eyes, as they may end up replicating the construction of a technology that does not allow its use by a non-specialized public, and therefore unintentionally (but also uncritically) replicate a lasting authoritarian use of technology, which very possibly has a generational impact on culture and ways of life.
