Abstract
This work addresses a significant challenge for governments and territorial planners: achieving social well-being in cities. In this regard, the combination of population growth and environmental care is fundamental for well-being and, consequently, for achieving sustainability. The objective of this study is to analyze the current relevance of urban green areas (UGAs) and their impact on sustainability within urban studies, by identifying the trend in recent scientific articles on the topic. The methodology used was mixed. First, a qualitative approach involved a theoretical review of the contribution and benefits of UGAs for the population and sustainability. Second, a quantitative approach utilized the Dimensions database (1995-2024) and the keywords "urban green areas and sustainability" in the titles and abstracts of scientific articles. Network analysis was performed with VOSviewer. The results showed that demographic growth is a forecast that demands attention and adequate management of territory and natural resources. UGAs can contribute to city sustainability, becoming key solutions for population health, the ecosystem, and climate change mitigation. It is concluded that UGA conservation is necessary to ensure urban sustainability, and that the well-being of the population depends on actions from both society in general and various governmental bodies through the implementation of public policies. Safeguarding the future requires commitment and respect for environmental care.
Keywords:Urban green areas, population growth, sustainability
