Abstract
Abstract:
The following study analyzes the Puente del Diablo, a historic structure that forms an essential part of the architectural heritage of Coatepec, Veracruz. This bridge, built with traditional techniques such as masonry and the semicircular arch, represents the technical skill and aesthetic sensitivity of Novohispanic builders. The Puente del Diablo, constructed in the late 16th century by master stonemasons from Puebla, stands out for its great solidity, its design based on wedge-shaped voussoirs, and its endurance for more than four centuries, as well as for the legends that enrich its cultural value.
The study presents the historical context of Coatepec, from its original settlement to its colonial consolidation, and highlights the importance of roads and communication routes as elements of social and economic development. It emphasizes the need to preserve these assets through inventories, restoration using traditional techniques, legal protection, cultural tourism, and community participation.
The bridges of Coatepec symbolize the connection between past and present and stand as testimony to the identity, memory, and technical evolution of the region.
