Strategic Territorial Transformation for Prosperous Tourism Destinations

Abstract

Tourism has become an important factor in the development of a city's infrastructure. If these initiatives are implemented through the guidance of a Strategic Territorial Transformation, they generate endogenous development that supports the progress of a territory by providing a better quality of life for its inhabitants. This paper proposes an analysis of the transformation elements required by a city to evolve into a prosperous tourist destination. This process of transforming the city into a thriving tourist destination requires the creation of a vision related to local economic development, inclusive of some of the goals of SDGs 8, 12, and 14, so that they become the main roadmap for analysis for the transformation based on competitiveness strategies for the use of the environmental, social, and economic components of the territory, enhanced according to the classification of the types of tourism planned for the city. These can be business, sports, cultural, gastronomic, sun and beach, adventure, wine, religious, and, as mentioned by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Domestic Tourism, where people travel within their own country. Globalization has turned tourism into a worldwide leisure activity.The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) proposes classifying tourist destinations into domestic tourism: trips within a country made by people who permanently reside there; inbound tourism: trips within the same country by people who do not permanently reside there; and outbound tourism: trips by residents of one country to another.
