Underground space and sustainability: contemporary urban binomial
Abstract
In recent decades, there has been a trend towards the use of underground space in cities to overcome various limitations and problems due to urban expansion and population growth. Thus, there is a new vision of underground space, in which this spatiality has become a resource and a relevant component within the contemporary city. With this panorama, the concept of sustainability and its relationship with the underground space is discussed. Likewise, the multifaceted relationship between underground space and urban planning is shown through some cases, which allows evidencing its potential to boost sustainability. It is evident that the integration of underground space in the contemporary city has contributed to the social, economic and ecological issues that occur in it.
