Abstract

This article exposes the progress of a collaborative project between the “Architecture and Urbanism for Development Academic Group” (UVCA-452) of Universidad Veracruzana and the Municipal DIF of Jilotepec, Veracruz. The initiative aims to improve the homes of families belonging to vulnerable groups, which include people with various disabilities such as motor, visual, auditory, cognitive, and/or psychosocial disabilities. The aim is to adapt and optimize these spaces to make them more accessible and comfortable for all members of the home. The methodology used consisted of architectural surveys carried out by students, complemented by interviews with people with disabilities and their caregivers, to accurately capture their specific needs. The analysis revealed adverse living conditions, characterized by narrow spaces, insufficient lighting, ventilation and, in some cases, considerable structural damage that needs to be addressed by the discipline of architecture. The study addresses the challenge of not only modifying the physical dimensions of homes, but also training architects-in-training in the application of neuroscience principles, which is essential for designing spaces that perceptually improve the quality of life of residents. This work identifies a significant lack of knowledge in neuroarchitecture, underlining the urgent need to integrate these principles into the architectural discipline, which will allow us to effectively confront the challenges of inclusive design, promoting a longer and more comfortable life for people with disabilities.
